Just like how people would download apps from the App Store, the same thing could happen with AI as AI software could be listed, sold, and downloaded through a specific store as well. This is something OpenAI is considering as a marketplace could potentially help could sell AI models.
This information reportedly comes from two people familiar with the situation, who said that the creator of ChatGPT is considering creating a marketplace. Should this be actualized, the marketplace would allow users to sell AI models to other users.
This could include AI models customized for specific businesses and could provide more optimized AI products focused on certain aspects. With a marketplace, OpenAI could adopt the App Store approach, where the company would get a share of the payments from customers.
This would also potentially create a new potential stream of revenue for OpenAI as well as a secondary economy where AI enthusiasts and developers could create specific AI tools.
A report by Grand View Research noted that the market size value for the mobile app market in 2023 was $228.98 billion, while the revenue forecast in 2030 is $567.19 billion.
Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he doesn't want the company to go public to retain full control. In May, Altman noted that he had zero equity in the company.
