Arrested OpenAI Engineer Had a One-Way Ticket to Saudi Arabia Booked for October 12, per Bloomberg
The OpenAI engineer charged over a hidden recording device in an executive conference room had one-way tickets to Saudi Arabia booked for October 12 for himself and family, per Bloomberg and court filings.
A bug behind the TV
OpenAI security staff found the device on September 30, during a routine sweep of an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco offices.
Per the Justice Department, a small audio recorder was plugged into a USB port behind a television and disguised with toilet paper. Investigators believe it was placed around September 28. A second device was later found in a bag belonging to the employee.
The room was not a random one. Executives use it for discussions covering model research, product plans, commercial strategy and government work.
The arrest and the tickets
The FBI arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, on October 9. He is a Saudi Arabian national who joined OpenAI in July 2025 and worked as an engineering lead on its agents and data platform work. OpenAI fired him the same day he was arrested.
Per Bloomberg, a court filing shows Alfozan had one-way tickets booked from San Francisco to Saudi Arabia via Istanbul for October 12, three days after his arrest, for himself, his wife and a third family member. Prosecutors argued in a sealed filing that he had both the means and the incentive to flee.
Alfozan is charged with using a device to intercept oral communications, which carries up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He is also a venture partner at Raed Ventures, a Saudi venture firm. The Justice Department has not accused him, or Saudi Arabia, of espionage.
What OpenAI says
OpenAI says it has no indication that he accessed or took model weights, source code or customer data. The company says it restricted his access gradually while working with federal investigators, and that it used its own AI models to help analyze data recovered from the device.
He previously spent five years at Meta. His detention hearing is set for October 19.

Options market and stocks to watch
OpenAI is private, so there is no direct ticker. The market read runs through MSFT, its largest backer and cloud partner, which absorbs OpenAI headline risk in both directions.
The second-order trade is AI security. A bugging case at the world's most valuable AI lab is an argument for bigger corporate security and insider-threat budgets, which puts PANW and CRWD on watch for sympathy call flow.
NVDA is worth monitoring for any sign the story widens into export-control or espionage territory, which would hit the whole AI complex. For now this is a corporate security story, not a market event, but watch unusual flow in the security names and follow developments on the Unusual Whales news feed.
