OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra, Brockman Says ‘Welcome to the AGI Era’

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra and president Greg Brockman told reporters ‘Welcome to the AGI era,’ though the company stopped short of a formal AGI declaration. Here is what it means for MSFT, NVDA, and the AI complex.

OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra, Brockman Says ‘Welcome to the AGI Era’

OpenAI has shipped GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model to date, and president Greg Brockman went as far as telling reporters, ‘Welcome to the AGI era.’ The company is positioning the model as a step-change in autonomous computer use, coding, and cybersecurity, while stopping short of a formal AGI declaration.

What OpenAI actually released

OpenAI has shipped GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model to date. President Greg Brockman says it might already qualify as ‘AGI’ or is at least within reach, meaning an AI system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work by OpenAI’s own definition.

GPT-6 Astra is rolling out first to select organizations through OpenAI’s Daybreak program, with broader availability for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers expected in the coming days. It will also be accessible through the API and cloud platforms like AWS Bedrock and Microsoft Azure.

Astra was pretrained on more than 100,000 GPUs at the Stargate facility in Texas. OpenAI researcher Aidan Clark called it the company’s largest training run ever.

The AGI claim, with an asterisk

Brockman says he personally believes OpenAI has reached AGI, while leaving users to decide whether Astra meets that definition. ‘I think it might be about this model,’ Brockman said in a briefing with reporters about whether Astra could mark the arrival of AGI.

‘There’s no contractual AGI triggering anymore, so that’s actually not a relevant concept,’ he said. Here Brockman was referring to the previously existing stipulation in OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft that said the duo’s partnership would dissolve once AGI had arrived. As Brockman noted, that stipulation no longer exists.

Translation for traders: the AGI label no longer has contractual bite on the MSFT partnership, so the ‘AGI era’ line is marketing and mission framing, not a legal trigger.

Capabilities and safety flags

The model ‘can zip through spreadsheets, fill out forms, and navigate across web pages often at superhuman speed,’ he said. OpenAI also released benchmark assessments that showed Astra beats its previous best model, GPT-5.6 Sol, as well as the best current models from its rival Anthropic, Claude Fable 5.1, on a wide range of tasks.

OpenAI disclosed this week that Astra has reached what the company calls its ‘Critical’ cybersecurity capability threshold. According to OpenAI, the model can, when equipped with the necessary tools and access, discover previously unknown security vulnerabilities and develop methods to exploit them across well-protected computer systems without a human directing each step. Astra is the first OpenAI model to trigger the company’s stricter safeguards for critical cyber capabilities.

OpenAI acknowledged that Astra was harder to monitor in evaluations designed to test whether it could evade oversight. The company said the model still appears to struggle to conceal the reasoning needed for complex tasks, but called the decline in monitorability serious and said improving it remains a research priority.

The skeptical read

OpenAI has not shown that Astra outperforms people at most economically valuable work, part of the company’s own historical definition of AGI. Some of the most attention-grabbing, headline results also depend on tools and agent infrastructure surrounding the model.

It’s been a big week for launches with Anthropic, Meta and Google also announcing updates to their leading models. That means the competitive backdrop for enterprise AI spend just got noisier, not clearer.

Options market and stocks to watch

Watch for reaction across the AI complex as traders digest whether ‘AGI era’ language actually changes the enterprise adoption curve:

  • MSFT: Astra will be accessible through Microsoft Azure, and the old AGI contract clause is now moot, so watch for flow around the deepening OpenAI relationship.
  • NVDA: A training run on more than 100,000 GPUs at Stargate keeps the capex story front and center. Watch for any read-through to AI infrastructure demand.
  • GOOGL: Google is one of the peers shipping new models this week. Watch how Gemini positioning holds up against Astra’s computer-use pitch.
  • AMZN: Astra will be available on AWS Bedrock, which matters for AWS’s AI narrative. Watch for cloud-share commentary.
  • META: Also announced model updates this week. Watch for flow as investors compare open-weight strategy against OpenAI’s frontier push.
