OpenAI is building an AI jobs platform that could challenge Microsoft’s, MSFT, LinkedIn

OpenAI is building a new AI-powered jobs platform designed to connect people with AI skills to organizations that need them.

Planned for launch by mid-2026, the platform will serve as a bridge between talent and employers, offering roles in automation, prompt engineering, and other AI-driven fields. The move positions OpenAI as a potential rival to Microsoft’s LinkedIn, the leading professional networking site.

How It Works
The OpenAI Jobs Platform will use AI-powered matching tools to link qualified candidates with employers. It will cater both to experienced professionals and to individuals looking to gain practical exposure in AI applications. OpenAI says its goal is to help businesses, governments, and organizations of all sizes integrate AI into their operations. Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, noted the platform is meant to ensure that access to AI opportunities is not limited to a privileged few.

Why It Matters
The launch of the jobs platform reflects a shift toward AI-first employment ecosystems. By combining training, certification, and algorithm-driven matching, OpenAI aims to:

  • Close the gap between AI skills and organizational demand.
  • Create higher-paying opportunities for AI-trained workers.
  • Provide local governments and businesses easier access to AI expertise.
  • Expand AI literacy across wider demographics.

Competition With LinkedIn
The new platform could directly challenge LinkedIn by focusing on AI-first recruitment. Despite Microsoft’s $13 billion investment in OpenAI, the two firms have acknowledged each other as competitors in certain areas. OpenAI’s certification programs could also rival LinkedIn Learning, which offers courses and credentials across multiple industries.

OpenAI Academy
Alongside the platform, OpenAI is expanding its free education initiative, OpenAI Academy. The academy will now provide AI fluency certifications at multiple levels, from basic workplace AI knowledge to advanced prompt engineering. Learners can prepare through ChatGPT’s Study mode, which emphasizes interactive questioning, feedback, and guidance. Companies will also be able to integrate these certifications into their training and development programs.
