Pentagon Sets Fitness, Grooming Bar for Hegseth ‘State of the Force’ Speech

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is putting a tight filter on who gets a seat at his upcoming ‘State of the Force’ address, and the criteria have less to do with rank than with fitness tests and haircuts. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon has asked military commanders to put forward service members for the Sept. 30 event who meet specific fitness and appearance standards.

What the Pentagon is asking for

An email sent to Army commanders said potential attendees must pass the Army fitness test and satisfy its waist-to-height ratio, while maintaining ‘impeccable grooming and uniform standards (no exception).’ Officials told the outlet that other military commands received similar instructions.

The emails also said members selected to attend should be ‘consistently rated as top performers within their formations,’ have a ‘clear record of integrity, discipline and selfless service,’ ‘demonstrate strong presence, clear communication and sound judgment under pressure’ and ‘serve as role models for their peers and subordinates.’

Who gets picked, and a workout with the boss

The standards were sent to commanders throughout the military outlining who can be selected as audience members for the address, and candidates can include lower-ranking officials and enlisted service members.

Those who are selected to attend the event will also have the opportunity to work out with the Defense secretary.

The Pentagon's email comes almost a year after it unveiled new grooming standards, which now require service members ‘to be clean shaven and neat in presentation for a proper military appearance.’ Hegseth has put a focus on troops' outward appearance since he was picked by President Donald J. Trump to lead the Defense Department.

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon's chief spokesperson, said service members would be able to obtain shaving waivers through military medical officials but ultimately the commander was the final approving authority.
