Peter Thiel Doubts JD Vance or Marco Rubio Can Win the 2028 Race

Peter Thiel says he worries it will be hard for either JD Vance or Marco Rubio to win in 2028, and warns Democrats could nominate a democratic socialist.

Peter Thiel Doubts JD Vance or Marco Rubio Can Win the 2028 Race

Billionaire investor Peter Thiel is throwing cold water on the GOP’s 2028 bench, saying he thinks it will be tough for either Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio to win the White House. The comments came on the ‘MD Meets’ podcast this week, and they add a fresh layer of political-risk noise for traders already parsing the 2026 midterms.

What Thiel actually said

Thiel, cofounder of PayPal Holdings and a major Republican donor, said he doubts any 2028 GOP nominee can easily win the White House, even Vice President JD Vance, whom he has long backed. He remains a ‘Vance partisan’ but called it ‘the wrong question’ to debate who between Vance and Rubio would be the stronger nominee.

‘I worry that it will be very hard for either candidate to win. And so, I don’t know, my pessimistic thought is that that’s the wrong question,’ Thiel said.

Why Thiel’s view carries weight

Before he entered politics, Vance worked at Mithril Capital, a firm Thiel cofounded. In his new memoir, Vance wrote about Thiel’s effect on his life and called his mentor ‘possibly the smartest person I’d ever met.’

During Vance’s 2022 Ohio US Senate GOP primary, Thiel donated $15 million to a pro-Vance super PAC, which, alongside Trump’s endorsement, helped propel the future vice president to victory. When the biggest financial backer of the current VP publicly hedges, political-betting markets and policy-sensitive sectors tend to take notice.

The Democratic angle Thiel is watching

Instead of focusing on the GOP, Thiel told Döpfner that he’s more interested in what happens inside the Democratic Party. He said a potential GOP wipeout this November could lead Democrats to choose a democratic socialist as their nominee in 2028.

He put roughly even odds on Democrats nominating a democratic socialist in 2028, calling that outcome the ‘end of America’ and arguing the Democratic Party carries more institutional weight than the GOP.

Prediction markets widely expect Democrats to retake the House, which is in line with historic norms, but it remains to be seen which party will win the Senate. That midterm setup is the near-term catalyst traders should be modeling first.

Options market and stocks to watch

Political-cycle risk tends to bleed into specific sectors long before an election. A few names to keep on the radar:

  • PYPL: Thiel’s original vehicle and a frequent headline stock whenever his name is in the news.
  • PLTR: Palantir is closely tied to Thiel’s political orbit; watch flow around any perceived shift in DC influence.
  • DJT: Trump Media trades as a proxy for MAGA political momentum, so 2028 succession chatter matters.
  • LMT and RTX: Defense primes tend to react to changes in the presumed foreign-policy path, which runs through Rubio at State.
