Pornhub has blocked all users in Arkansas from the site after the state’s new age verification law went into effect.

In response to a new law in Arkansas mandating age verification for users, the most popular pornographic website in the country has taken the step of blocking access to its content for IP addresses originating from Arkansas.

Visitors from Arkansas attempting to access Pornhub are presented with a solitary webpage featuring an explanation for the company's decision. The statement conveyed, "Although our primary concern revolves around ensuring safety and adhering to regulations, requiring users to provide their identification each time they wish to access an adult platform is not the most effective strategy for safeguarding our users. In fact, it could potentially jeopardize the privacy of both children and adults."

Act 612, which came into effect on August 1, 2023, stipulates that websites containing a substantial amount of explicit or harmful material to minors must implement age verification mechanisms, with some exceptions. This legislative change coincides with the enforcement of numerous other new state laws.

A representative from Pornhub informed 40/29 News that, following compliance with a similar law in Louisiana, the website's traffic experienced an 80% reduction. Notably, users did not cease their consumption of adult content altogether but rather migrated to other, potentially more perilous websites. The spokesperson argued that age verification should ideally take place at the device level, allowing parents to supervise and restrict the browsing activity of minors.

This situation highlights the broader challenges surrounding the regulation of online content and the balance between protecting users, especially minors, and preserving privacy and accessibility.
