Resumes including ‘they/them’ pronouns are more likely to be overlooked

A recent report by Business.com, a platform dedicated to business resources, reveals that more than 80% of individuals identifying as nonbinary express concerns that their nonbinary status could have a negative impact on their job search. Furthermore, 51% of respondents believe that their gender identity has had a somewhat or very detrimental effect on their experiences within the workplace.

Ryan McGonagill, the director of industry research at Business.com and the author of the report, emphasizes that these figures underscore the significant amount of progress that still needs to be made in terms of promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging in work environments.

McGonagill states, “It's evident that we have substantial work ahead on multiple fronts. While numerous companies have prioritized diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts over the past decade, the outcomes of this study, coupled with previous research, demonstrate that the composition of teams across most industries still does not accurately mirror the U.S. population.” He adds, “Even more concerning, many individuals, such as those we interviewed who identify as nonbinary, feel alienated.”

McGonagill further suggests, “Companies should establish well-defined initiatives and realistic timelines aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace. Additionally, they should gauge their employees’ sense of belonging. Investing in these endeavors will undoubtedly yield positive outcomes for both companies and their team members.”
