"Mr. Altman's departure follows a thorough review process by the board, which determined that he did not consistently provide transparent communication, impeding the board's ability to fulfill its responsibilities. The board has lost confidence in his capacity to effectively lead OpenAI."

In an official statement, OpenAI's board of directors affirmed the company's unwavering commitment to ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits humanity as a whole.

"We appreciate Sam's significant contributions to the establishment and growth of OpenAI. However, we believe that new leadership is essential for our future endeavors.

"As the overseer of the company's research, product, and safety functions, Mira is exceptionally qualified to assume the role of interim CEO. We have full confidence in her ability to guide OpenAI through this transitional phase."

OpenAI's board of directors includes OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, independent directors such as Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner from the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology.

The company also announced that Greg Brockman will step down as chairman of the board, but he will continue in his position at the company, reporting to the CEO.
