Saylor: ChatGPT Helped Strategy Raise $15B for Bitcoin Buys

Michael Saylor says artificial intelligence did more than write emails at Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy. He says ChatGPT helped him design the preferred stock financing model that enabled Strategy to raise about $15 billion for its Bitcoin-focused balance sheet.

The claim came on The Diary of a CEO podcast and has been circulating across finance media since. The figure is capital raised, not personal profit.

What Saylor actually said

After Strategy exhausted more traditional ways of raising capital to buy more cryptocurrency, Saylor said he turned to ChatGPT to help design a Bitcoin-based preferred stock that lawyers and bankers initially questioned because no one had created a similar product before.

Saylor walked through the debasement arithmetic that makes cash a guaranteed losing asset, to the moment ChatGPT helped him engineer STRK, a novel convertible preferred stock that raised $15 billion in a year. His pitch to workers and founders: “You don’t want to learn how to do things the AI can do. What you want to do is learn how to ask the AI to do something that’s never been done before,” he said.

The $15 billion, in context

The amount represents capital raised by Strategy, not personal profit earned by Saylor. That capital funded more Bitcoin purchases through preferred stock issuance and related offerings.

Strategy has bought almost 850,000 bitcoin worth just over $50 billion over the last six years, with many of its recent purchases funded by debt and equity sales.

Not everything is rosy at Strategy

The financing engine has not shielded the company from Bitcoin volatility. While its preferred stock has rebounded, the company’s market cap recently plunged 80% with bitcoin’s price.

The financing breakthrough has not insulated Strategy from Bitcoin’s downturn. On Aug. 3, the company disclosed that it sold 1,638 BTC for about $104.7 million, at an average price of $63,957. Strategy also sold some bitcoin to manage debt and built a $4 billion cash reserve.

Why traders should care

Strategy has effectively become a Bitcoin proxy financed through creative capital markets structures. If ChatGPT-assisted product design is now part of the toolkit, expect more issuers to try to replicate the STRK template, and expect more scrutiny of how those preferreds behave when BTC drops.

The tell is in the preferred stack: spreads, coupon coverage, and conversion mechanics matter as much as spot Bitcoin here.

Options market and stocks to watch

Watch for reaction across the Bitcoin-treasury and AI complex:

  • MSTR: Strategy itself. Watch for flow around the preferreds and the common as BTC moves, and any follow-on issuance headlines.
  • MSFT: Microsoft is the primary commercial vehicle for OpenAI. Watch for AI-productivity narrative flow tied to high-profile use cases.
  • COIN: Coinbase tends to trade with Bitcoin sentiment and corporate treasury adoption stories.
  • MARA and RIOT: Bitcoin miners often move on any BTC-treasury or issuance headline out of Strategy.
