Senator Hawley introduces bill to send $600 tariff rebate checks to Americans
Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced a new bill that would give nearly all Americans a $600 rebate from tariff revenues, including an additional $600 per dependent child—amounting to $2,400 for a family of four.
In a statement, Hawley said, “Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families’ savings and livelihoods.” He added, “Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country.”
The proposal is modeled after the direct payments distributed under the 2020 CARES Act, which provided $1,200 to adults and $500 per child during the height of the COVID-19 crisis. Hawley previously worked with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in 2020 to push for a second round of $1,200 stimulus checks.
Under the current plan, payments would begin to phase out for households earning over $150,000 annually, heads of household making over $112,500, and individuals earning more than $75,000. The rebates are intended to help Americans cope with higher prices linked to tariffs, which brought in $30 billion in federal revenue and are projected to generate up to $150 billion in 2025.
If tariff revenue exceeds these projections, the bill allows for a larger per-person credit. Hawley has also been a strong supporter of tax relief for working-class Americans, including advocating for expanded benefits in the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, which was signed into law by former President Trump earlier this month.
