Senator Rand Paul is floating Elon Musk to be Speaker of the House after the powerful, billionaire tech businessman helped torpedo a bipartisan agreement on a short-term spending bill
Senator Rand Paul is proposing a bold outsider for the position of Speaker of the House: Elon Musk.
“The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress,” Paul (R-Ky.) posted on Musk’s platform, X. “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk… think about it… nothing’s impossible. (not to mention the joy of seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds).”
Paul’s suggestion, unorthodox even for one of the Senate’s most unconventional members, comes as Speaker Mike Johnson struggles to quell a conservative revolt over his rejected short-term government funding proposal.
Other prominent Republicans also voiced support for Musk as a potential Speaker.
“I’d be open to supporting @elonmusk for Speaker of the House,” Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted on X. “The establishment needs to be shattered just like it was yesterday. This could be the way.”
Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) hinted at the need for fresh leadership, stating during an interview on The Benny Show podcast that the House should “think outside the box” and consider unconventional candidates.
“Given their affection for Vivek [Ramaswamy] and Elon, let them choose one of them, I don’t care which one, to be their speaker,” Lee said. “That would revolutionize everything.”
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump and Musk on Wednesday both called on Republicans to reject the spending deal negotiated by Johnson. Some House Republicans have openly questioned Johnson’s ability to continue as Speaker in the next Congress, despite Trump’s endorsement.
House Republicans are scheduled to meet Thursday to determine the next steps for funding the government.
