Shipping giant Maersk is teaming up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink satellite network to equip hundreds of container vessels with high-speed internet access, per Bloomberg.

Maersk announced plans to equip its vessels with Starlink internet service, anticipating completion by the first quarter of the next year. The SpaceX-built satellite network is set to deliver internet speeds exceeding 200 Megabits per second, fostering improved connectivity for seafarers to stay in touch with their families and supporting the digitalization of vessel operations.

Leonardo Sonzio, Maersk's Head of Fleet Management and Technology, highlighted the potential for seamless cloud solutions with this high-speed connectivity, emphasizing the company's vision for advancing digital operations at sea.

Starlink, Elon Musk's global communications network, has already deployed over 5,000 satellites and attracted over two million subscribers. Beyond consumer markets, it has expanded its services to various sectors, including maritime, disrupting traditional satellite communications.

Maersk's decision to collaborate with SpaceX on Starlink followed a successful pilot phase involving more than 30 ships, where crew members provided "very positive feedback" about the service.
