Jeep Drivers Frustrated by In-Vehicle Pop-Up Ads for Extended Warranties
A growing number of Jeep owners are reporting intrusive pop-up ads on their vehicle’s media console, urging them to purchase an extended car warranty. According to multiple online complaints, the ad completely covers the screen whenever the car comes to a stop, promoting FlexCare Extended Care Premium plans with the tagline:
“Purchase peace of mind.”
The ad claims the warranty is factory-backed and offers protection in case of a mechanical breakdown, providing an option to “speak to a specialist.”
Drivers Complain About Ads Interrupting Their Drive
These in-car ads aren’t new—frustrated Jeep owners have been complaining for years. In 2023, a driver posted on a Jeep forum about seeing the same ad four times during a single 12-mile drive:
“Short of smashing a brick through the screen, does anyone know how to stop the radio from displaying a damn Mopar Extended Warranty ad on the Uconnect screen every time I come to a stop?”
Other drivers chimed in, calling the ads “incredibly annoying and unsafe” and warning they could cause accidents due to their obnoxious and intrusive nature.
Jeep’s Response: Ads Are Part of the SiriusXM Contract
When a frustrated driver tagged Jeep Customer Care on the forum, the company’s response didn’t offer much relief:
“It should also be noted that ads are part of your contractual agreement with SiriusXM, but we are working on the frequency. Thank you for your patience.”
A Stellantis spokesperson later told Fortune that a temporary software glitch affected the ability to instantly opt out in a few cases. The company claimed the error had been identified and corrected, but did not clarify how often ads appear or which vehicles are affected.
Automakers Cashing in on Software-Enabled Upsells
While in-car advertising is still relatively new, upselling customers with subscriptions and add-ons has become a major focus for automakers. In 2021, Stellantis announced plans to generate €20 billion ($20.8 billion) annually from software-enabled vehicles.
The company framed this initiative as a way to “expand customer options” through over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing drivers to add features and services even years after purchase. However, as Jeep owners are discovering, some of those “updates” include ads that interrupt their drive.
