Sony recouping most of $508M in US tariff refunds after IEEPA levies struck down

Sony is set to recoup roughly $508 million in US tariff refunds after the Supreme Court ruled the Trump-era IEEPA import levies unlawful, with the bulk of the money flowing to its PlayStation business. The refund is already showing up in results and prompted an upward revision to full-year guidance.

The refund math

Sony estimates it will have received ¥80 billion ($508 million) in tariff refunds from the United States government, in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling in February that the global levies imposed by the Trump administration were illegal.

Roughly 70% of the tariff refund, about $356 million, was collected between April and June 2026, leaving an estimated $152 million still to be received from the US government.

Where the money is going

“Most” of that refund will be recouped by Sony’s gaming division, CFO Lin Tao said during a Q&A with press and investors. The gaming segment absorbed the brunt of the tariff-driven cost hit, so it gets the bulk of the reversal.

The 2025 tariffs contributed to Sony’s decision to raise prices on hardware and accessories, taking the base PS5 from $500 in early 2025 to $550 in August 2025 and up again to $650 in April 2026.

Guidance and margin impact

The refund was one of the main reasons for a 37% jump in the gaming segment’s operating profit to ¥202 billion ($1.26 billion) and contributed to an upward revision of the full-year operating profit forecast.

Lin Tao noted the influx has pushed Sony to raise its operating income forecast for the current year by roughly 10%, with favorable FX and cost improvements also contributing.

The development has drawn backlash from PS5 buyers who paid inflated prices during the tariff period and will see no direct benefit from the payout, with a class-action lawsuit already in progress and Sony expected to respond later this month.

Nintendo of America was also sued by customers who claim they are entitled to tariff refunds after Nintendo passed costs onto consumers via price hikes before becoming entitled to refunds itself following the Supreme Court ruling. Watch for similar filings across other large importers.
