SpaceX Seeks 80,000 US Cell Sites to Build a Nationwide Wireless Carrier

SpaceX is in talks for access to at least 80,000 US cell tower sites, per Bloomberg, as it assembles spectrum, satellites, and ground infrastructure to become a fourth nationwide wireless carrier.

SpaceX is seeking access to at least 80,000 cell tower sites across the United States as it prepares to launch a nationwide wireless carrier, according to Bloomberg, a ground buildout that would put Starlink Mobile head to head with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Half the Towers in America

The scale is the story. The 80,000 sites SpaceX is chasing equal roughly half of the 158,500 purpose built cell towers operating in the US last year, according to the Wireless Infrastructure Association. SpaceX is in talks with at least one major tower company, including Crown Castle, which runs about 40,000 US towers; American Tower holds about 42,000 US sites and privately held Vertical Bridge about 18,000. The leases could be worth billions of dollars. Crown Castle chief executive Christian Hillabrant, asked on Wednesday's earnings call about leases with SpaceX and Amazon, said the company is talking with "all parties" but declined to discuss specific customers. SpaceX has not commented on the report.

The Pieces Assembled This Month

The tower hunt is the ground half of a network SpaceX has been assembling in plain sight. On October 8 it agreed to buy a nationwide portfolio of up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz low band spectrum, a deal expected to close in the first half of 2027 pending regulatory approval. A day earlier, the FCC approved 15,000 next generation direct to cell satellites for Starlink Mobile, the service that connects ordinary phones straight to the constellation. Satellites cover the empty places; towers provide the density where subscribers actually live. "We will be building out our terrestrial networks so there's broad-based connectivity anywhere that SpaceX and Starlink are allowed to operate," Elon Musk said on the company's earnings call this week, adding that Starlink Mobile is on its way to becoming "a major mobile carrier in the US."

The Bill and the Skeptics

Building a fourth national carrier from scratch is one of the most expensive projects in telecom. TD Cowen has estimated a nationwide terrestrial network would cost more than $80 billion and take years of spending beyond the tower leases themselves. Nothing is signed yet: the Bloomberg reporting describes talks, not leases, and SpaceX would still need radios, backhaul, retail distribution, and customer support at national scale.

Options Market and What to Watch

The market rendered its first verdict in extended trading: AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), and T-Mobile (TMUS) fell between 4.2% and 5%, while Crown Castle (CCI) jumped about 9 to 10% and American Tower (AMT) added about 5% on the prospect of a giant new tenant. SpaceX (SPCX) rose 1.4% after hours. Watch for signed master lease agreements, which would convert a headline into committed capital, and for the spectrum deal's regulatory path into its first half 2027 close.
