SpaceX Makes a Run at the Carriers, and Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile Get Crushed
Telecom gets its worst scare in decades as SpaceX buys nationwide spectrum
SpaceX has agreed to acquire Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio in a deal valued at about $8 billion, a landmark step toward turning Starlink Mobile into a full U.S. wireless carrier. The low-band licenses span nearly the entire U.S. population and fill the one critical gap in Starlink's plan to offer cellular service directly to phones: 800 MHz airwaves travel long distances and penetrate buildings far more effectively than higher-frequency spectrum, enabling service that works indoors without ever touching a cell tower.
Wall Street did not take it well. On Friday, T-Mobile slid 13.2% to its lowest level in over 33 months, Verizon lost about 10%, and AT&T dropped, with all three ranking among the biggest percentage decliners on the S&P 500. The pain spread to Europe, where Deutsche Telekom fell 7.9%, Orange lost 2.5% and Telefonica slipped 4.6%, pushing the pan-continental STOXX 600 Telecommunications index down 2.9% to its lowest level since January 30.
"The implications for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are somewhat negative: their defenses against low-band spectrum claims are weakening," said Kutgun Maral, media, cable and telecom equity research analyst at Evercore ISI. The deal remains subject to regulatory approval, and SpaceX shares rose 1.2% in afternoon trading.
What it means for the options market
Telecom options could see a surge in put volume on VZ, T and TMUS as traders hedge against further downside or bet the selloff overstates the threat. Friday's crash pushed implied volatility higher across the sector, making premium expensive on both sides of the tape.
Watch the tower operators too: AMT, CCI and SBAC bucked the sector-wide selloff, advancing between 6.5% and 13.3%, as investors bet Starlink's wireless ambitions ultimately drive demand for towers, rooftops and small cells.
