SpaceX is taking its lunar ambitions up a notch. The company aims to build an automated factory on the Moon using humanoid robots to handle basic infrastructure work, equipment maintenance and resource processing, reducing reliance on a long-term human astronaut presence.
What was announced
Elon Musk laid out a sweeping plan for SpaceX to reach profitability during an investor call, including robotic satellite factories on the Moon. Musk acknowledged building factories largely staffed by robotic workers ‘sounds like super sci-fi right now,’ but insisted ‘it’s going to happen.’
At present, the company has not revealed any timeline, investment size or details on robot deployment. That leaves investors with a big vision and thin specifics.
Why the Moon, and why now
Musk said on X that SpaceX is now zeroing in on building a self-growing city on the Moon, something he thinks could happen in under 10 years, framing the Moon as a quicker path while Mars remains a longer-term goal.
Long-term goals are to use resources already on the Moon to manufacture parts needed for future missions, reducing dependence on expensive supplies launched from Earth. In other words, in-situ manufacturing to cut the tyranny of the rocket equation.

The Tesla connection
Jim Cantrell, a SpaceX founding team member, told the New York Post that Musk intends to use Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots to build infrastructure on the Moon and Mars before humans arrive: ‘The robots build the settlement before the humans show up.’
Tesla is winding down Model S and Model X production and will prioritize Optimus robots and Cybercab robotaxis, with capital spending expected to exceed $20B this year for new factories focused on robots and autonomous vehicles.
The investor reality check
SpaceX remains one of the world’s high-growth tech companies, but investors made clear that they want evidence that earnings will arrive well before the robots’ performance. The shift feels timely, especially with SpaceX gearing up for its IPO later this year.
