Starting salaries for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in computer science are projected to drop by 4% to $72,843 for the class of 2023 compared to a year ago

Starting salaries for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in computer science are projected to drop by 4% to $72,843 for the class of 2023 compared to a year ago, per NACE.

Meanwhile, software engineering and data science job listings are down 24% and 27% from last year, per Bloomberg.

This, Bloomberg says, has to largely do with layoffs in the industry.

Bloomberg News identified  professionals who lost their jobs in recent weeks at Amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc., Twitter Inc. and Redfin Corp. Many said they expect their responsibilities will go to former colleagues who remain or to employee resource groups, which often don’t get compensated for that work.

On Jan 25, Google previously announced its plans to lay off 12,000 employees from multiple locations following other massive layoffs in the tech industry. The company is starting in its home state of California, and the first round of layoffs saw the exit of 1,800 employees.

Some notable actions include how 27 in-house massage therapists were laid off. Of this number, 24 alone came from Mountain View. These were on top of the "director" or "senior" roles being let go in the company's Bay Area.
