Surface-to-Air Missile Systems Deployed Near Trump's Mar-a-Lago Estate
Surface-to-air missile systems have been deployed around President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Per the Palm Beach Post, the systems were positioned at the request of the US Secret Service, and federal officials have confirmed that ground-based air defense assets are now in place around the property.
Missiles on a barge
A pair of Avenger air defense systems now sits on a floating barge in the Lake Worth Lagoon, on the west side of the seawall next to Trump's 17-acre oceanfront property.
A separate bank of Avenger systems has been positioned on the south side of Donald J. Trump International Airport, near the area where Air Force One parks during the president's visits to Palm Beach.
A photographer for the Palm Beach Daily News first noticed the systems on October 23, ahead of Trump's arrival later that day for an overnight stay.
What the Avenger does
The Avenger is a mobile short-range air defense system built by Boeing. Each unit is a modified Humvee fitted with a rotating turret carrying two pods of Stinger missiles, eight missiles in total, plus a .50 caliber machine gun, per a US Army website cited by the Post.
The Stinger is a short-range, infrared-homing surface-to-air missile. Per the Army, the Avenger's targets can include cruise missiles, drones, helicopters and low-flying and high-speed fixed-wing aircraft.
A heightened threat environment
NORAD and US Northern Command confirmed they deployed ground-based air defense assets in and around Mar-a-Lago at the Secret Service's request, but declined to discuss tactics or procedures, citing security considerations.
Northern Command said it is providing counter-small unmanned aircraft system fly-away kits in support of the Secret Service's protective operations. The statement did not identify individual weapons systems or confirm whether a specific threat prompted the deployment.
"The U.S. Secret Service continues to operate in a heightened threat environment, and this agency continuously adapts its protective operations to incorporate cutting-edge tools, technology, and methods to safeguard our protectees," a Secret Service spokesperson said.
Restricted skies over Palm Beach
The deployment comes as a proposal to permanently lock down the airspace over Mar-a-Lago remains in the works. Temporary flight restrictions over the estate have been in place since October 2025 and were recently extended for another year, per the Post.
More than 160 planes and drones have breached the restricted airspace over Palm Beach since the restrictions took effect, per an FAA filing in federal court.
Officials have not said how long the missile systems will remain in place.
Defense stocks to watch
Deployments like this keep the focus on the short-range air defense and counter-drone supply chain. The Stinger missile is made by RTX, while the Avenger platform is built by BA. Other large defense primes worth watching on any expanded air defense spending include LMT, NOC and GD.
