Taiwan plans to face China threat by buying 400 US anti-ship missiles

Per Reuters

Taiwan is arming its military by buying up 400 US anti-ship missiles. This was to deal with the rising China threat.

The purchase involves Harpoon AGM-84 anti-ship missiles from the US. This matched the Pentagon's announcement that it would sell 400 anti-ship missiles for a contract at $1.17 billion. The production is expected to be completed by March 2029.

Taiwan revealed in 2020 that it wanted to buy Harpoon anti-ship missiles, made by Boeing, as part of its efforts to modernize the country's military. When Taiwan Defence Ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang was asked regarding the news, Li-fang said that they had confidence that the "deal would continue according to schedule."

Although not specifically stated by the Pentagon, Bloomberg said the buyer was Taiwan. Despite declining to comment directly, the Pentagon still gave a statement regarding the country's position towards Taiwan.

"The United States makes available to Taiwan defense articles and services necessary to enable it to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability."

The report by Bloomberg shared that this would mark the first time Taiwan will receive mobile land-launched versions of the missiles.

Towards the end of 2022, it was reported that Taiwan could buy anti-tank systems from the United States for $180 million. During the time of the report, it was noted that the Pentagon had already approved the sale of Volcano anti-tank mine-laying systems.

Recently the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Representative Michael McCaul gave a statement regarding US and Taiwan. He noted that the US troops were "on the table" should an invasion from China happen.

McCaul: “They’re not where they need to be... If we’re going to have deterrence for peace, we need to get these weapons into Taiwan.”
