Tech Billionaires Added a Record $845 Billion This Year While Every Other Billionaire Lost Money
Every dollar of new billionaire wealth came from tech
Tech billionaires are pulling away from the rest of the ultra-rich. The world's roughly 100 tech billionaires added a record $845 billion through September, per Bloomberg, while every other billionaire combined lost $62 billion. The gain was the biggest first-nine-month increase ever recorded by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, driven by the AI boom and soaring US technology stocks, and it lifted the group's combined fortune to $4.6 trillion.
The world's roughly 100 tech billionaires added a record $845 billion through September, per Bloomberg, while every other billionaire combined lost $62 billion.
Musk alone accounts for about 40% of the increase
The concentration is extreme even by the index's own standards. Tech fortunes now represent 36% of all wealth on the index despite their holders making up only about a fifth of its members, and Americans captured 94% of the net gains. Since September 10, all 10 of the world's richest people have been Americans for the first time since Bloomberg began tracking the ranking in 2012. Elon Musk alone gained $310 billion, about 40% of the entire index's increase, after SpaceX merged with xAI and went public in June.
The boom is minting new fortunes as well as enlarging old ones: Michael Dell's fortune surged 81% to $254 billion on AI data-center demand, Mark Zuckerberg added $23 billion as Meta shares jumped 27% in September, and all seven Anthropic co-founders joined the index after a funding round valued the company at $965 billion. The index has cooled since, falling about 6% from its June peak as investors questioned the debt financing the AI buildout, per Bloomberg's reporting.

Options market and stocks to watch
When one sector produces all of the wealth gains, index risk becomes single-theme risk: QQQ carries the concentration, with NVDA and META among the names that did the lifting this year. A 6% pullback from the June peak shows how quickly the same concentration cuts the other way when AI financing questions surface.
