Tesla, $TSLA, is working on a wireless charging pad where you just park over it and it automatically starts charging your vehicle, per Electrek.

Tesla has officially acknowledged its development of a wireless inductive home charger for electric cars, confirming previous teases from earlier this year.

Tesla had not previously shown interest in wireless charging, but the company hinted at the technology in recent months.

While the act of plugging in an electric car is not a cumbersome task, wireless charging could address this need, particularly in the context of preparing for self-driving technology. The idea is that if cars can drive themselves, they should be able to charge autonomously without human intervention.

Tesla had historically favored an automated robot arm over wireless charging for this purpose, but the company's stance appears to be evolving.

Earlier this year, Tesla teased a new wireless home charging station, sharing an image as part of a presentation. Though the automaker did not provide official comments on the situation, it briefly acquired a startup specializing in wireless charging before eventually selling it back – incorporating some of its staff in the process.

In a recent Jay Leno video focusing on the Cybertruck, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen confirmed the company's work on inductive charging, stating, "We are working on inductive charging. You don’t even need to plug anything in at that point. You just drive over the pad in your garage and you start charging."
