Tesla, $TSLA, will have 85,000 Nvidia, $NVDA, h100 GPUs training AI by end of year, per Elon.
esla’s Q1 2024 earnings brought a mix of results for the EV company and its investors. CEO Elon Musk provided additional insights during the earnings call, particularly regarding Tesla's internal AI training. Musk mentioned that the company is now less constrained in its ability to train AI and aims to have 85,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs dedicated to this task by year-end.
Musk highlighted the state of Tesla's AI computing during the Q1 2024 earnings call. Tesla's AI training capacity had been somewhat limited previously, as shown in a graph in the earnings report. However, the company anticipates significant growth in this area in the near future.
NVIDIA's technology has been instrumental for companies investing in AI, including Tesla. With plans to deploy 85,000 H100 GPUs by the end of 2024, Tesla appears poised to accelerate its AI efforts.
Musk noted, “We are, at this point, no longer training-constrained, and so we’re making rapid progress.”
He also emphasized the importance of efficiency in training, stating, “We are making sure that we’re being as efficient as possible in our training,” and highlighting the significance of optimizing the use of H100s.
During the discussion, Musk expressed discomfort with the term GPU, saying, “I always feel like a wince when I say GPU because it’s not. GPU stand — G stands for graphics, and it doesn’t do graphics.”
