Tim Cook's Final Day as Apple CEO: From $350B to Over $4T

Tim Cook's run as Apple CEO ends today, August 31, with John Ternus taking over tomorrow. Cook leaves behind one of the most valuable companies on the planet after growing AAPL from roughly $350 billion in 2011 to north of $4 trillion in 2026.

The numbers behind the handoff

Apple was valued at just under $350 billion on Aug. 24, 2011 when Cook took over, and the company grew its market capitalization tenfold under his leadership. Apple touched the $5 trillion market capitalization mark on July 28, 2026, weeks before Cook hands over the reins on September 1.

That valuation has since pulled back to roughly $4.5 trillion after a post-earnings sell-off. Apple's share price is up about 2,230% from Cook's first day as CEO through Aug. 7, 2026, with total return closer to 2,680% including buybacks and dividends.

Cook's capital return machine

During his tenure, Cook oversaw roughly $877 billion worth of stock buybacks, the hallmark of Apple's capital allocation policy for more than a decade. He initiated quarterly dividends in 2012 and executed an ongoing share repurchase program, returning more than $1 trillion to shareholders.

That capital return story is a big reason AAPL has been a core holding for institutions through the entire post-Jobs era.

What Ternus inherits

Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering is set to take over the lead role on Sept. 1, 2026, with a product-first background and experience dating back to the Steve Jobs era. The iPhone 17 lineup has been a major hit, with iPhone revenue up 22% year over year through the first three quarters of fiscal 2026.

Apple is working on a foldable phone, an AI pin, and smart glasses as it leans into a forward-thinking product roadmap. The market will be watching whether Ternus reallocates capital away from buybacks toward R&D or M&A.

The AI overhang

The major criticism of the Cook era has been lackluster results with AI, as Apple Intelligence faced multiple delays, and an AI-powered Siri upgrade originally announced in 2024 only recently debuted for consumer beta testing. Apple's market cap now sits around $4.5 trillion, and it again trails Nvidia for the title of world's most valuable publicly traded company.

Options market and stocks to watch

AAPL: Watch for elevated options activity around the CEO transition tomorrow and into the iPhone event window. Any commentary from Ternus on capital returns or AI strategy could move implied vol.

NVDA: Watch the relative trade against Apple for the most-valuable-company title, particularly if AI narrative rotates.

GOOGL: Watch given Apple's reported multiyear collaboration to use Gemini for core foundational models, which ties Alphabet deeper into the iPhone AI stack.

MSFT: Watch as a mega-cap comparable if AAPL sees a leadership-related rerating in either direction.
