Top 100 Americans Hold $5.5T, More Than the Bottom Half Combined

The wealth pyramid in the U.S. keeps getting steeper at the top. The 100 wealthiest Americans are now estimated at about $5.5 trillion in net worth, a figure that exceeds the roughly $4.3 trillion held by the entire bottom half of the country, or about 66 million households.

The numbers behind the gap

The concentration at the very top has accelerated alongside the run in equities and private valuations. The wealthiest 1% held about $55 trillion in assets in the third quarter of 2025, roughly equal to the wealth held by the bottom 90% of Americans combined.

Moody's Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi told CBS News that household wealth is highly concentrated and becoming steadily more concentrated. The trend is not new, but the gap is widening fast.

Why the top keeps pulling away

The mechanics are simple: the rich own the assets that are rising. According to Gallup, 87% of Americans who own stocks are adults living in households earning $100,000 or more.

Middle-income households tend to have their wealth tied up in their homes, and house price growth has been slowing, while lower-income Americans are struggling with higher debt loads. That split is exactly why equity rallies show up as widening inequality data.

Billionaire fortunes keep compounding

The latest snapshot of wealth inequality comes as billionaire fortunes continue to grow rapidly, with an Oxfam International report finding that billionaire wealth in 2025 increased three times faster than the average annual rate over the previous five years.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion, and the 20 richest people in the country hold a collective $3 trillion, nearly half of all American billionaire wealth, up from $2.3 trillion a year ago, with 15 of these 20 now members of the $100 billion club.

Options market and stocks to watch

The wealth gap story is largely an asset-price story. Watch names where founder or insider stakes dominate valuation and where the top decile of consumers drives demand.

  • TSLA: Watch for flow tied to Elon Musk's stake, given his net worth stands at $668 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
  • WMT: Watch for continued Walton family concentration after shares are up 26% since last year's ranking, helping Alice Walton retain her title as America's richest woman.
  • AMZN: Watch for consumer split-signal, with high-income spending resilient versus a stretched low-end.
  • META and ORCL: Watch for founder-stake sensitivity as mega-cap tech drives the bulk of billionaire wealth gains.

Bottom line

For traders, the story matters less as politics and more as positioning. Asset ownership at the top is what turns index gains into headline wealth gaps, and the equity concentration keeps building. For more, see other news.
