Trump Imposes 100% Tariff on Foreign Drones; Trump Jr. Tied to UMAC

The Trump administration signed a proclamation imposing tariffs of up to 100% on foreign-made drones and components, a move aimed at forcing the US drone supply chain away from China. Shares of domestic drone names ripped on the news, with UMAC leading the pack.

What the order actually does

Under the order, drones weighing more than 25 kilograms or equipped with thermal imaging capability will face a 100% tariff. Drones under that weight threshold will face a 25% tariff.

Trump slapped a 15% tariff on drones and parts from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan, and 10% on those from the U.K. The tariffs take effect 21 days after signing, while tariffs on components deemed not particularly sensitive kick in 180 days after signing.

Why now

The administration justified the tariffs on national security grounds under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying import penetration is substantial and the US is too reliant on foreign drone producers.

The order follows a December Federal Communications Commission action that halted wireless authorization approvals for Chinese drones, and one analyst described the new tariffs as designed to stop supply-chain laundering, referring to importing Chinese components for domestic assembly.

The Trump family angle

The tariffs come as the president’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, have been expanding their portfolios by investing in various drone companies, with Donald Jr. serving as an investor in drone maker Unusual Machines and sitting on the company’s advisory board.

Trump Jr. joined the UMAC advisory board back in November 2024. Unusual Machines stock soared over 100% on the day of that announcement.

Market reaction

Unusual Machines popped 24.2%, while Red Cat rallied 8.8%. Aerovironment added 1.3% and Kratos climbed 2.9%.

For 2027, the Trump administration is asking for a record $1.5 trillion defense budget, and as part of that budget the Department of Defense is looking for a historic $75 billion for drones. That is the tailwind traders are pricing in on top of the tariff wall.

Options market and stocks to watch

Watch for continued flow into the domestic drone complex and any hedging around China exposure:

  • UMAC: the most direct beneficiary given its NDAA-compliant component pitch and Trump Jr. ties. Watch for follow-through volatility and unusual call activity.
  • AVAV: AeroVironment is a scale US player; watch for institutional flow tied to DoD drone budget headlines.
  • RCAT: Red Cat Holdings sits squarely in the small-drone bucket. Watch how it trades relative to program wins.
  • KTOS: Kratos Defense benefits from the broader unmanned systems narrative. Watch for spillover on defense-budget headlines.
