Trump: $5,000 Checks If GOP Wins, "Depression" If Democrats Do
"If the Democrats win, you will have an economic depression, much like 1929," Trump said. "If the Republicans win, you will each have $5,000 in your pocket and economic success for our country like we have never ever seen before."
The remarks came in a video posted to Truth Social on Saturday, October 3. Trump repeated the pledge that night at a rally in Vandalia, Ohio.
The promise: $5,000 checks to all adult citizens of the United States if Republicans retain the House and Senate in the November 3 midterms. He first made the pledge in September at the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas.
The math and the mechanics
Trump calls it the "Trump dividend," funded by "massive amounts of money through tariffs and record-setting economic success." He estimated the cost at approximately $1 trillion and called it "a very easy thing to do."
The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget puts the cost at roughly $1.2 trillion for a single year. Net tariff revenue in the first 11 months of fiscal 2026 was only about $167 billion, per Treasury data.
He pointed to the $1,776 payments to military members announced in December as proof he can execute direct payments: "Everybody got their money."
Congress would have to authorize the spending, and most legislation needs 60 Senate votes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune raised budget reconciliation as a possibility. Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio plans to introduce legislation after the election. House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole expressed skepticism.
Polling from Strength in Numbers/Verasight: 53% support the $5,000 payments, but support drops to 35%, with 54% opposed, when the payments are tied to a GOP victory. Only 13% believe Trump genuinely intends to send the money, 62% say the promise is mainly to win votes, and 71% say it is inappropriate to tie payments to an election result.
Vice President JD Vance suggested wealthy Americans could be excluded, though Trump said the checks go to all adult citizens.
Prior unfulfilled direct-payment pledges include a $5,000 "DOGE dividend" from February 2025 and a $2,000 tariff dividend. Neither materialized.

Options market and stocks to watch
A $1 trillion-plus direct-payment promise is a fiscal story with two market reads: near-term consumer spending impulse if it ever happens, and deficit expansion either way. Watch these names:
SPY: the broad market ETF prices midterm outcomes and fiscal expectations in real time.
WMT: Walmart is the purest read on lower-income consumer spending, which is where stimulus checks land first.
AMZN: Amazon catches the discretionary half of any consumer windfall.
