Trump argues that trade and tariffs should be instituted by President

Trump: So, let’s get this straight??? The President of the United States is allowed (and fully approved by Congress!) to stop ALL TRADE with a Foreign Country (Which is far more onerous than a Tariff!), and LICENSE a Foreign Country, but is not allowed to put a simple Tariff on a Foreign Country, even for purposes of NATIONAL SECURITY. That is NOT what our great Founders had in mind! The whole thing is ridiculous! Other Countries can Tariff us, but we can’t Tariff them???

President Donald Trump also said that most Americans will receive a dividend payment of at least $2,000, funded by money the U.S. collects from tariffs.

Posting on Truth Social, he claimed: “We are taking in trillions of dollars and will soon start paying down our massive $37 trillion debt,” adding that the payment would go to the public — excluding high-income earners.

The Supreme Court is currently deciding whether Trump’s broad tariffs are legal. He imposed them under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, but lower courts have ruled that many of the tariffs exceeded his authority.

Trump previously floated the idea of giving Americans $1,000 to $2,000 from tariff revenues during an interview in October, predicting that tariffs could generate more than a trillion dollars annually.

According to Treasury data released in September, the government had collected $195 billion in customs duties during fiscal year 2025.
