Trump Personally Authorized the Livestream of Nidal Hasan's Execution

Trump personally signed off on livestreaming the Hasan execution

President Donald Trump said Friday he "absolutely" approved plans to livestream the firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted of killing 13 soldiers in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, the BBC reported. It is a step beyond this week's Pentagon announcement: the personal authorization comes from the president himself, not just Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The execution is set for December 3 at Fort Hood, Texas, at 1 p.m. local time, the same hour as the 2009 attack. If it proceeds, it would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961, when an Army private was hanged, and the first military firing-squad execution since World War II. Trump added that he did not care how Hasan died, only that the execution happens, while noting the Pentagon is still making a final determination.

Not everyone in the administration is on board. Vice President JD Vance told reporters Friday he was unsure the livestream would happen at all, saying, "I don't know that that's going to happen," and that he would not watch it. Vance called the 2009 attack "the worst terrorist attack on American soil outside of 9/11."

The plan has drawn bipartisan pushback. Republican Senator Thom Tillis compared public executions to the practices of "oppressive dictatorships like Iran and Afghanistan," while Democratic Senator Jack Reed called it a "barbaric spectacle" and a "gift to anti-American terrorist recruiters." Hegseth, who announced the plan on Real America's Voice, said: "We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public."

What it means for the options market

This is a policy and legal story, not a market mover: no listed company or sector has direct exposure to the execution decision. The tradable angle, if any, is headline-driven noise around defense names on days the story dominates coverage, plus any legal challenge that delays the December 3 date. Watch for event headlines, not earnings impact.
