Trump Says He's Banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico From White House
Trump says he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House over coverage he calls fake news, teeing up another First Amendment fight and putting media parent stocks on watch.
President Donald Trump said Friday he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House “effective immediately,” escalating his long-running battles with news organizations. The move was announced on Truth Social and its operational scope remains unclear.
What Trump actually said
Trump wrote that media outlets “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” and promised “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
The scope of the ban wasn’t immediately clear. As of shortly after the post, CNN continued to work from the White House, the network reported.
Legal exposure
The attempt to block access to disfavored news outlets could draw a legal challenge over violations of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. The ACLU has already signaled it views the post as unconstitutional.
The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has previously held that once the White House opens general press facilities to journalists, access can’t be denied arbitrarily, and press pass restrictions must come with due process. A divided appellate court last year said the White House does have broader discretion over which journalists enter restricted spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One.

Precedent from the AP fight
Last year, the administration barred the AP from some events because it continued to use “Gulf of Mexico,” sparking the still-pending First Amendment case. A federal judge in April 2025 ruled the White House must restore the AP’s access to presidential spaces. That legal dispute is ongoing.
The White House took control of selecting the presidential press pool from the White House Correspondents’ Association last year.
Why traders should care
Media parent companies have real revenue exposure to White House access, ad-market sentiment, and litigation risk. Any expansion of the ban to “other outlets,” as Trump warned, could pull more names into the story.
Options market and stocks to watch
Watch for reaction across the media complex and adjacent names as the market prices in headline risk and any legal escalation.
- WBD: parent of CNN, most directly exposed to any access restriction and any resulting legal fight.
- CMCSA: Comcast/NBCUniversal ties to MS NOW put it in the crosshairs of the same access dispute.
- NYT: watch for sympathy moves if Trump’s promised expansion to “other outlets” materializes.
- FOX: potential relative beneficiary if rival networks face restricted White House access.
- PSKY: broader media tape mover; watch for correlated flow on any escalation. See more news here.
