Trump: ‘I would be the greatest communist in history, right up there with Lenin’
Trump told an Epoch Times reporter he would be the greatest communist in history, right up there with Lenin, while calling communism a disaster. Here is the trader angle.
President Donald Trump told a reporter this week that he would be “the greatest communist in history” and would rank “right up there with Lenin,” framing the comment as a jab at how easy communism is to sell as an idea rather than an endorsement.
What Trump actually said
A reporter for the Epoch Times, a pro-Trump and anti-Chinese Communist Party outlet, asked Trump to speak on the dangers of global communism, warning that the idea of a classless and stateless society was spreading in democratic countries in Europe and stateside.
“Communism is easy to sell,” he said. “I would be the greatest communist in history. I’d be right up there with Lenin. I’d be as good as anybody.”
Trump said communism has proven to be a “disaster” over “thousands of years under different names,” and attributed his bump with Hispanic voters in 2024 to his anti-communist stance.
The political framing
Trump went on to say that “lowlifes” were pitching a shift toward socialism and warned that the United States was facing more danger than it had in either World War or during 9/11, adding that communist states “die in squalor.”
He conceded the American economy had “flaws,” but said it provided “amazing” benefits to workers, adding, “We have more jobs than we’ve ever had. People are making more money than they’ve ever made. It’s just the best system.”

Why traders care about the rhetoric
Rhetoric around socialism, communism and “the best system” often previews the administration’s next policy push, whether on taxes, tariffs, or regulation. Markets have already been sensitive to Trump’s off-the-cuff comments on trade partners and the Fed.
For headline-driven desks, the takeaway is simple: expect more culture-war framing heading into the next fiscal fight, and more volatility around soundbites that touch tax, wealth, and property. Check other news for the follow-through.
