Trump has announced a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture and 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities
President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled a new round of tariffs, including a 100% duty on branded or patented drug imports beginning October 1, unless companies are manufacturing inside the United States.
The administration will also impose a 25% tariff on all heavy-duty truck imports and a 50% levy on kitchen and bathroom cabinets, Trump announced as he rolled out the industry-targeted measures.
“The reason for this is the massive ‘FLOODING’ of these products into the United States by foreign countries,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, stressing the need to safeguard domestic producers.
The move comes despite repeated appeals from U.S. businesses urging the White House to hold off on additional trade barriers.
The 100% tariff is expected to affect major exporters of branded pharmaceuticals, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. According to U.N. data, the U.K. shipped more than $6 billion worth of pharmaceutical goods to the U.S. last year.
Jane Sydenham, investment director at Rathbones, told the BBC’s Today program that months of speculation over potential tariffs had left the pharmaceutical sector on a “rollercoaster ride.”
“Share prices in the pharmaceutical industry have been under pressure for some time in the U.K., U.S., and Europe. Markets dislike uncertainty, and that has cast a shadow over the sector for a while,” she said.
Neil Shearing, chief economist at Capital Economics, suggested the latest measures were “not quite as dramatic as they first appear,” pointing to exemptions for generic medicines and for companies building U.S. facilities.
“Many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical firms already operate production sites in the U.S. or have announced plans to do so,” he noted.
On the trucking front, Trump argued that the tariffs would shield American companies such as Peterbilt and Mack from “unfair outside competition,” adding that these firms “will be protected from the onslaught of outside interruptions.”
Additional duties on cabinets and other furniture, the president said, were intended to counter high import volumes undermining U.S. manufacturers. Starting next week, upholstered furniture imports will face a 30% tariff.
