Trump has fired IRS commissioner, and Bessent to serve as acting IRS commissioner temporarily
President Donald Trump is removing Billy Long from his post as Internal Revenue Service commissioner just two months after his confirmation, four sources familiar with the matter told CNN.
According to two White House officials, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been tapped to serve as acting IRS chief while the administration searches for a permanent successor.
Three of the sources said Trump intends to nominate Long, a former Republican congressman, for an ambassadorship.
The IRS has experienced an unusually unsettled stretch during Trump’s second term, cycling through multiple leaders in quick succession.
Long’s dismissal was first reported by The New York Times.
