Trump has rung the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange
President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, marking a historic moment as he was also named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for the second time.
The dual honors celebrate Trump’s extraordinary return from being an ostracized former president—following his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss—to a decisive victory in the 2024 presidential race.
A Moment of Recognition
Before ringing the bell at 9:30 a.m.—a first for the New York native—Trump addressed the crowd, calling the experience “a tremendous honor.”
“Being recognized by Time magazine again, for the second time, feels even better this time around,” he said.
Joined by his wife, Melania Trump, daughters Ivanka and Tiffany, and Vice President-elect JD Vance, Trump smiled as chants of “USA” echoed through the stock exchange floor. Moments later, he raised his fist after signaling the start of the trading day.
Celebrating Achievements
During his remarks, Trump highlighted key appointments in his incoming administration, such as Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent, and previewed his policy priorities, including a pledge to fast-track federal permits for large-scale projects exceeding $1 billion.
“I think we’re set for a tremendous run,” Trump said. “But first, we have some big problems to straighten out, both here and around the world.”
Time Magazine’s Decision
Time magazine’s editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, announced Trump’s selection on NBC’s Today show, describing him as the person who had “the most influence on the news in 2024—for better or for worse.” Jacobs emphasized Trump’s historic political comeback and his impact on reshaping American politics and the presidency.
“This is someone who has redefined the American presidency and reordered the nation’s political landscape,” Jacobs noted.
Trump was previously named Time Person of the Year in 2016, following his first presidential victory.
Reflections on Victory
In an interview published by Time, Trump described his campaign strategy and its overwhelming success.
“I called it ‘72 Days of Fury,’” Trump explained. “We tapped into the country’s emotions. People were angry, and we gave them a voice.”
A Ceremonial Highlight
As Trump rang the bell, an image of the Time magazine cover featuring him was projected onto a wall at the NYSE. Surrounded by family and key members of his transition team, the event concluded with his signature walk-on anthem, “God Bless the U.S.A.”
After the ceremony, Trump returned to his Florida home, reflecting on what he called “a monumental day for the country.”
