Trump has said: If Canada retaliates to our 25% tariffs, we will double them
Canada Strikes Back with $155 Billion in Counter-Tariffs
Canada is retaliating against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade measures with its own set of counter-tariffs totaling $155 billion.
Trudeau’s Response
“Tonight, I am announcing that Canada will respond to the U.S. trade action with 25 per cent tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared in a televised address to the nation on Saturday.
His statement follows Trump’s decision to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports.
Trump’s Executive Order
In a statement on Saturday, Trump confirmed:
“I have implemented a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian energy) and an additional 10% tariff on China.”
According to the executive order, these tariffs will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, February 4.
Canada’s Next Steps
Trudeau convened a cabinet meeting and held a virtual discussion with provincial and territorial premiers on Saturday. He also spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum about the growing trade tensions.
Sources told Global News that Canada is set to move forward with retaliatory tariffs, though specifics have yet to be disclosed.
Trump’s Justification
Trump cited fentanyl smuggling and border security as key reasons for his decision.
“We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it,” Trump said in his statement.
