Trump has said that the US is considering buying beef from Argentina
Republican Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska on Tuesday cautioned President Donald Trump that his proposal for the United States to purchase beef from Argentina would harm American cattle ranchers and fail to reduce consumer prices.
“Bottom line: if the goal is addressing beef prices at the grocery store, this isn’t the way,” Fischer said in a post on X.
Trump suggested the idea over the weekend as part of efforts to bring down rising beef costs in the U.S., which have surged this year. The plan would include additional U.S. investment in Argentina, whose struggling economy has been supported by a $20 billion currency swap deal with the Trump administration.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently confirmed that Washington is considering another $20 billion in financing for Argentina. Argentine President Javier Milei, a close ally of Trump, has welcomed the proposal.
Fischer said she has contacted the administration to voice her “deep concerns” about the plan and highlighted the ongoing challenges facing Nebraska’s agriculture sector, calling it the backbone of the state’s economy.
