Trump to Iran: Either Sign a Deal or It Won't Exist Any Longer
Trump just gave Iran the ultimate ultimatum.
The Threat
"Now I have to make a decision. They'll either sign a very fair deal or they won't exist any longer," Trump told reporters on the South Lawn on Thursday, en route to Oklahoma.
The warning follows almost a week of negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials in New York that ended without agreement. Trump said last Friday he had rejected Tehran's proposal to end the war, then shared a Truth Social post renaming the Strait of Hormuz the "Trump Strait."
"I rejected their deal. They want to make a deal where they open the strait immediately because they're losing so badly," Trump said.
The Stakes
The war has now passed its seven-month mark. Tehran's demands include an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen funds, and an end to the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.
The war has raised living costs through a rise in energy prices due to Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane for oil exporters in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented the official U.S. response to President Masoud Pezeshkian, though state media has not confirmed details. Pezeshkian said Wednesday that "we will make every effort to bring the agreement to fruition," insisting any deal must be based on a "win-win strategy."
At the UN General Assembly last month, Trump framed the choice in even starker terms: "Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?"
What This Means for the Options Market
Energy is the direct transmission line here. Any escalation or breakthrough around the Strait of Hormuz reprices crude instantly, and oil options have been the cleanest expression of this conflict all year.
Stocks to watch:
- United States Oil Fund (USO) - the purest crude price proxy for headline-driven spikes
- Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) - broad energy equity exposure to an oil shock
- Chevron (CVX) - major integrated oil name that benefits from sustained high crude
- Lockheed Martin (LMT) - defense flows tend to follow escalation rhetoric
Watch call skew and volume in USO and XLE around any announced decision date. A deal would likely crush oil volatility; a strike would send it vertical. The VIX also deserves attention on any major escalation headline.
The Bottom Line
Deal or destruction. That is the choice Trump just laid out for Iran, and energy markets will price every headline between now and his decision.
