Trump Jr. Went on Mongolian Hunting Trip With Russian Businessman Who Financed His Wedding Party, per FT
Donald Trump Jr. went on a hunting trip in Mongolia with the Russian businessman who financed his wedding party, per the Financial Times.
The trip was in August, three months after the wedding, per the FT.
Two Days in Uvs
Umar Kremlev flew to Mongolia on a chartered jet in late August and spent two days at Trump Jr.'s camp in the western province of Uvs, per the Financial Times.
Kremlev runs the International Boxing Association and is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who has traveled in Putin's official delegations, per the FT's reporting.
He did not travel alone. Kremlev arrived with Arthur Martirosov, a partner in Voskhod, a venture fund under US sanctions.
The FT reconstructed the meetup from flight records, social media posts, public documents and people on the ground.
One person on the trip said the pair were "cautious" about being photographed together. Kremlev's own videos show two of the organizers of Trump Jr.'s hunt, but never Trump Jr. himself.
Trump Jr. also had dinner with Mongolia's president during the trip, and the US Embassy paid $18,715 for hotel rooms tied to a Secret Service "visit" during the trip, per the FT's reporting.
The Argali
Trump Jr. bagged an Altai argali, a rare wild sheep, during the outing, according to a local guide, per the FT.
The Altai argali is prized by trophy hunters for its large horns and is listed as endangered in the FT's account, while other listings describe the species as near-threatened.
The hunt itself is not the main scrutiny. The company is.
The Wedding Money
The trip came three months after Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs for the three-day Bahamas celebration of Trump Jr.'s marriage to Bettina Anderson, including a private island and a fireworks show, per the FT.
That wedding spending was first exposed by ProPublica last month.
Anderson called the money a gift from a friend. President Donald Trump later claimed his son had repaid Kremlev, and Kremlev has also said Trump Jr. paid him back.
Trump has separately said he had "no idea who Umar is," per reporting on the FT story.
The Official Response
Trump Jr.'s camp describes a personal friendship built on hunting and fishing, not business.
"It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that they went hunting together earlier this year," a spokesperson said, per the FT.
A spokesperson for Trump Jr. said the two have "a personal friendship, not a business relationship," built on their love of hunting, per the FT's reporting.
The Counterintelligence Warning
Former officials told the FT the relationship is a risk whatever the intentions behind it.
"It really doesn't matter if people have the most above-board intentions," said Holden Triplett, who led counterintelligence at the National Security Council during Trump's first term. "The moment the Russian security and intelligence services figure out someone has a relationship with anyone of high value, they will try to weaponize that."
Intelligence experts consulted by the FT said relationships like this create favorable conditions for manipulation.
What It Means for Markets
There is no Mongolia hunting trade, but there is a political-risk trade, and Trump-linked names are where it shows up first.
Trump Media, DJT, is the most direct public proxy for Trump family headlines, and its options flow tends to spike when a story moves from politics pages to investigations and oversight.
The broader point for traders is headline risk around the administration's Russia posture. Stories that raise counterintelligence and sanctions questions, including the presence of a partner in a US-sanctioned fund on the trip, feed into the same policy channel that moves energy, defense and sanctions-sensitive names.
Watch for follow-through in Washington, including any requests for records or oversight inquiries, before treating this as more than a reputational story.
The Bottom Line
Per the FT, the president's son spent two days hunting a rare sheep in western Mongolia with a Putin-linked businessman who had covered hundreds of thousands of dollars of his wedding three months earlier, and the two were careful not to be photographed together.
Trump Jr.'s camp calls it a personal friendship. Former counterintelligence officials call it an opening. Both descriptions are now on the record.
