Trump Warns He May Be the Last Republican President
Trump warned he could be the last Republican president if Democrats retake Congress in the 2026 midterms, raising the political stakes into 2028.
President Donald Trump is framing the 2026 midterms in existential terms for the GOP, warning in a new interview with Punchbowl News that he could be the last Republican to hold the White House if Democrats take Congress.
What Trump actually said
“And I'll tell you what, if they [Democrats] get in, I may be the last Republican president,” he said in an interview with Punchbowl News. Speaking to Jake Sherman, Trump added that if the Senate doesn’t “get smart,” he may be the last Republican president, calling it “a big statement.”
Trump told Punchbowl News he believes a key challenge for the Republican Party will be turning out his supporters in November, saying many voters are frustrated with Republican lawmakers and not himself.
The El-Sayed flashpoint
On Truth Social, Trump also singled out Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed over his push to end the filibuster, warning that if El-Sayed succeeds, Democrats would gain Senate and House seats, a stacked Supreme Court, and he would be the last Republican president.
Trump also declined to say whether Senate Majority Leader John Thune should stay in his leadership role, and weighed in on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, saying interest rate choices are partly up to the chairman but also affected by what he called a “very political” Federal Reserve board.

Why traders should care
A Republican victory in November would give Trump significantly more room to pursue the rest of his second-term agenda, while a Democratic takeover would create a powerful check on the administration and could bring two years of intensified investigations and legislative confrontation ahead of the 2028 election.
That is the setup markets will price through the back half of the year: tax policy continuity, tariff authority, and regulatory posture all hinge on which party controls the gavel.
Options market and stocks to watch
