Trump Posts Map Showing Canada, Mexico, Greenland as US Territory
Trump posted a Truth Social map placing Canada, Mexico, Greenland and Cuba under the US flag, extending a pattern of renaming and territorial messaging that traders in cross-border names should track.
President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social that appears to place Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Cuba and several other territories under the US flag, reviving questions about the administration’s posture toward its neighbors and trading partners.
What Trump posted
On Monday, September 7, Trump posted a map on Truth Social that depicts essentially the entire North American continent as part of the United States, including Mexico, Canada, Greenland, and Cuba.
The post did not include an explanation from Trump. The day prior, he hinted at renaming the US state of New Mexico to “New America” in a post on social media, with an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”
Part of a bigger pattern
Trump has repeatedly used maps, renaming proposals and territorial references in his public messaging. In January 2025, he ordered the US government to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”. On 27 August 2026, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use “Lake America” for Lake Ontario, a change that applies to US federal usage and does not alter Canadian or international naming.
The move came amid deteriorating relations with Canada and followed earlier remarks in which Trump floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st US state.

Why traders should care
The posts are symbolic, but they land against a backdrop of active trade friction with Canada and Mexico and an ongoing push over Greenland. Trump has repeatedly pushed for the US to take control of Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, arguing that the Arctic island is important to American national security.
Cross-border names, tariffs and diplomatic tone all feed into currency moves, commodity flows, and multinational earnings guidance. Traders watching USDCAD, USDMXN and Canada/Mexico-exposed equities should keep this rhetoric on the radar alongside the rest of the news cycle.
Options market and stocks to watch
Watch for reaction in names with heavy cross-border exposure:
- F and GM: watch for flow tied to any renewed tariff or USMCA chatter, given deep Mexico and Canada manufacturing footprints.
- CNQ: watch for moves in Canadian energy names sensitive to US-Canada trade tone.
- FXI is unrelated, but EWC and EWW: watch the Canada and Mexico country ETFs for headline-driven flows.
- UUP: watch the dollar index proxy for any FX reaction to escalating rhetoric.
