Trump Says "Nearly $100" Checks Headed to 20 Million Seniors
On Friday, Trump announced the payments in a Truth Social post, saying the money will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund.
His post: "I am pleased to announce that my Administration will, immediately, begin sending 'Checks' of nearly $100 to over 20 MILLION wonderful Seniors to help pay for their Medicare Part B premiums." The announcement came Friday night, October 2, after a midterm rally in Mobile, Alabama.
The White House fact sheet later clarified the actual amount: one-time $90 payments to more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees. The "nearly $100" was Trump's phrasing; $90 is the official figure.
The funding and the fine print
The 2026 standard Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 per month, with an annual deductible of $283, per CMS. The $90 payment covers about 44% of one month's standard premium. Trump claimed premiums had already been "reduced by significant amounts."
The funding source is the Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress funded with $2 billion to improve Medicare fee-for-service. Trump called it a "pointless 'Slush Fund'" and said it had never been used before, calling this the first time an administration used it to directly reduce costs for Medicare beneficiaries.
Eligibility: the vast majority of Part B enrollees qualify. Excluded are those whose Part B premiums are already paid by Medicaid, and higher-income beneficiaries paying IRMAA, the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount, about 8% of Part B enrollees.
Delivery: most eligible beneficiaries receive the $90 by direct deposit in early October, deposited to the account where Social Security arrives. Those without direct deposit get a mailed paper check at the address Medicare has on file. Questions go to 1-800-MEDICARE.
Separately, Trump announced roughly $500 refund checks to about one million ACA enrollees across 30 states, said to be overcharged under Biden, and renewed his proposed $5,000 "Trump Dividend" for every U.S. citizen "if, and when, the Republicans win the Midterm Elections."
The context: announced about five weeks before the midterms. An AP/NORC poll the same week found 65% of Americans blamed Trump's policies for rising living costs, and 73% disapproved of his handling of economic issues. Critics noted the post gave no eligibility rules or legal-authority details, and that a presidential social-media announcement does not substitute for the administrative process required to move public money.
