Trump said he will be placing a 100% tariff on all Hollywood movies not made in the United States

Donald Trump has reiterated his threat to introduce a 100% tariff on all films not produced in the United States, arguing that the American film industry has been “stolen” by other nations.

Speaking on Monday, Trump said California had been particularly impacted and claimed the measure would “solve this long time, never ending problem.”

Back in May, the U.S. president said he intended to meet with Hollywood executives to discuss the proposal and begin the process of imposing the levy, warning that America’s film industry was experiencing “a very fast death.”

His comments follow last week’s announcement of a fresh round of tariffs, including a 100% duty on branded or patented pharmaceutical imports and 50% levies on kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump declared: “Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’ California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!”

He added that the 100% tariff would apply “on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”

Trump did not specify when the measure would take effect. The White House has been asked for comment. It also remains unclear whether the tariff would extend to films on streaming platforms such as Netflix in addition to those screened in theaters, or how the levy would be calculated.
