Trump’s Signature Hits New U.S. Paper Currency for America’s 250th

The U.S. Treasury and the Trump administration have unveiled new paper currency designs featuring President Donald Trump’s signature, timed to America’s 250th birthday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent showed off the new U.S. currency featuring President Trump’s signature, which is set to enter circulation soon in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday.

What was announced

The move is a first for a sitting president, since traditionally, U.S. paper currency carries the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and the Treasurer, not the president. Trump’s signature will be placed on all U.S. paper currency and will replace the Treasurer of the United States’ signature on U.S. money for the first time in 165 years.

The president posted an image of the $100 bill, which bears his signature above Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s, to Truth Social. Bessent reposted the image, writing that it was “only appropriate” that the currency is issued on the anniversary of American independence.

Rollout timeline

The first $100 bills with the signatures of Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be produced in June, followed by other denominations in the coming months. The Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing is still producing notes bearing the signatures of former President Joe Biden’s Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, and Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

The department emphasized that this move did not place his portrait on money, since portraits of living people remain illegal, but instead added his signature alongside those of the Treasury secretary and treasurer.

Legal and political backdrop

The plans come in tandem with an ongoing effort to get Trump’s face on a coin, which has also drawn criticism since federal law prohibits the depiction of a living president on U.S. currency.

Michael Bordo, director of the Center for Monetary and Financial History at Rutgers, said the move will undoubtedly come with political pushback, but he does not know if Trump has crossed any legal red lines since the Treasury Secretary may have the authority to decide who signs the currency.

The change is largely symbolic for FX and rates, but it lands alongside Bessent’s pitch on dollar dominance. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance and fiscal strength and stability,” Bessent said in a statement.

Collectibles markets could see a bump. The addition of President Trump’s signature could create a new category: triple‑signed notes. If the series is limited to 2026–2027, notes with three signatures may become collectibles, especially if subsequent administrations revert to the traditional two‑signature format.
