Trump Says Ukraine Should Get a New President, Blames Zelenskyy for Diesel Prices

Trump says Ukraine should get a new president

President Donald Trump said Saturday that it was time for Ukraine to get a new president, according to the Associated Press.

Trump suggested President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not done enough to end the war with Russia, and he blamed Zelenskyy for high diesel prices in the United States.

"I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal," Trump said.

A diesel deal with Putin set this off

The remarks came one day after Trump struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to buy diesel from Russia, an attempt to address high fuel prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

Trump has urged Zelenskyy for weeks to stop Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy said Sunday that Ukraine was ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Russia stopped striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian and European officials reacted to the diesel deal with dismay, saying it will help pay for Russia's war effort. Diesel prices have risen as oil has become harder to move out of the Middle East since the start of the Iran war.

An AP-NORC poll published Oct. 1 found Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of Iran and blame him for higher prices.

How this could hit the options market

Energy is the first place this lands. Any shift in Russian diesel supply, sanctions, or Ukrainian strikes on refineries moves crude and refined product pricing, and traders will watch USO, XLE, and refiners like VLO and MPC.

Defense names are the second read. Talk of a forced leadership change or a faster settlement can swing expectations for future orders in names like LMT and RTX.

Watch headline volatility. Geopolitical comments on a weekend tend to gap energy and defense at the Monday open.
