Donald Trump is preparing to unveil his highly anticipated peace plan to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The proposal, expected to be revealed at the Munich Security Conference next week, has already sparked significant debate about its potential impact on Ukraine and its European allies.

A leaked draft of the plan, obtained by Ukrainian news outlet Strana, outlines several key provisions that could be controversial for both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. Critics like Zelensky argue that the plan is nothing more than Russian disinformation.

While Trump has not officially confirmed the details, the proposed terms reportedly include a temporary ceasefire to freeze Russia’s front lines. This ceasefire would begin at Easter and would be followed by the creation of a demilitarized zone monitored by European troops, including forces from the UK. Notably, American troops would not participate in the peacekeeping efforts, a decision Trump has emphasized to set his approach apart from previous US interventions.

The plan also calls for Ukraine to remain neutral in the conflict and abandon its bid for NATO membership. However, Ukraine could continue pursuing integration with the European Union, with a target date of 2030 for potential membership.

The EU would play a significant role in Ukraine’s postwar reconstruction under Trump’s proposal as part of a broader plan to ensure the country’s long-term stability and growth.

Perhaps the most contentious part of the plan involves the territory currently under Russian control.

Trump’s plan appears to require Ukraine to recognize Russian ownership of the regions Moscow has occupied, which account for roughly 20% of Ukrainian land. These areas, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea, and Zaporizhzhia, have been subjected to sham referendums conducted by Russia, further complicating any potential peace deal.

The peace framework also proposes gradually easing sanctions on Russia, with revenue from special duties being directed toward rebuilding Ukraine’s damaged infrastructure.

Zelensky has strongly opposed any peace deal that compromises Ukraine’s territorial integrity. His office dismissed the leaked plan as "Russian disinformation," accusing it of being an effort to weaken Ukraine’s position.

The Ukrainian President has consistently insisted that all occupied territories, especially in the east, must be returned to Ukrainian control for any lasting peace agreement.

Despite his firm stance, Zelensky acknowledges that regaining these regions may take time due to the complexity of the situation on the ground.

His main priority remains securing Ukraine’s future within NATO—or at the very least ensuring the country is under NATO’s protective umbrella.

Zelensky has repeatedly emphasized that NATO membership is essential to prevent future Russian aggression, insisting that NATO must cover all of Ukraine’s current territory to deter further invasions.
