U.S. House approves $61 billion in aid for Ukraine
In a swift move during a rare Saturday session, the House approved a substantial $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies. This decision, demonstrating a bipartisan effort, marks a significant step in reaffirming American support amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The package includes $61 billion specifically for Ukraine, signaling strong U.S. commitment as Congress works to provide timely support to the embattled nation. The passage saw an enthusiastic response from some lawmakers, who celebrated by waving Ukraine’s blue-and-yellow flags.
Other key aspects of the session included approval of aid to Israel and several other allies, as well as a legislative move to tighten regulations on TikTok, each supported by unique, bipartisan coalitions. The entire aid package is now poised to be passed by the Senate as early as Tuesday, with President Joe Biden ready to sign it into law immediately.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, despite facing internal opposition, expressed confidence in the historical significance of this legislative effort. President Biden also praised the bipartisan support and emphasized the urgency of the aid, particularly for Ukraine’s military needs.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude toward the U.S., particularly praising Speaker Johnson for his leadership, and celebrated the decision as a pivotal moment in history.
