US Bancorp Runs First Live USBDC Stablecoin Transaction on Stellar

U.S. Bancorp just moved from stablecoin talk to stablecoin production. The bank announced the successful execution of a live pilot transaction utilizing USBDC, its proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, to enable a cross-border payment between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe.

What actually happened

The pilot transaction was completed on the Stellar blockchain, demonstrating the ability for U.S. Bank to transfer value on-chain while maintaining integration with the bank’s core finance, risk, compliance and operations infrastructure.

The pilot tested minting and redeeming USBDC as well as freezing and clawing back tokens. It also validated the bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform, which connects blockchain networks with its finance, compliance, risk and operations systems.

Why Stellar

The transaction ran on the Stellar blockchain, following a November announcement to experiment with custom stablecoin issuance with the Stellar Development Foundation. Stellar’s network is small relative to the overall stablecoin market, which leaves runway for a bank-issued token to grow supply on-chain.

USBDC is institutionally focused and fully integrated with U.S. Bank’s regulatory and operational frameworks. That positions it for use cases like cross-border treasury operations, liquidity management, and collateral mobility rather than trading on public crypto markets.

The bank stablecoin race is on

USB is not alone. Last week, 21 financial institutions including Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs and UBS announced plans to form a company to issue stablecoins for payments and digital asset transactions.

The group aims to launch a dollar-pegged digital currency in the first half of 2027. The planned company will start with a stablecoin for the U.S. dollar. The members also plan to study tokens tied to other G7 currencies such as the euro. For more market news, follow the flow.

Regulatory backdrop

Regulators are tightening the frame around that ambition, having proposed bank-style customer identity checks for stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act, even as a coalition of lenders warns that the current framework has gaps.

Translation: banks are racing to plant flags before the rulebook is fully written, and USBDC is USB’s flag.
