Vance Defines Socialism as Replacing American Workers and "Boys in Girls' Sports"
Asked to define socialism, JD Vance said it means replacing American workers with foreign workers and letting boys play in girls' sports.
An unusual definition
Reporter: How do you define socialism personally?
Vice President JD Vance was asked the question at an October 8 White House press conference. His answer quickly went viral.
"I don't know what the term means anymore," Vance said. "I think in reality, what it actually means in the American context is that you want to replace American workers with foreign workers, and you want boys to play in girls' sports."
The context behind the remark
Vance had taken the podium to announce the suspension of Microsoft, Adobe and six IT outsourcing firms from the PERM green card program. He framed the move as putting American workers first.
"Classically, you would think socialism is about prioritizing workers," Vance said. He argued that self-described socialists would oppose the announcement even though it prioritizes American workers over foreign workers.
He also invoked Bernie Sanders, noting that the longtime socialist senator once opposed open borders on the grounds that they would displace American workers.
The reaction
The definition drew mockery from critics who noted it bears little resemblance to socialism as an economic system. Supporters said Vance was describing the modern American left's priorities rather than textbook theory.
Either way, the moment overshadowed the policy announcement itself, which marked the administration's broadest strike yet against skilled-worker immigration programs.

Options market and stocks to watch
The policy behind the press conference matters more for markets than the soundbite. The PERM suspensions hit outsourcing firms directly, and traders should watch the U.S.-listed ADRs: INFY, WIT and CTSH.
MSFT remains the highest-profile name in the crackdown, and continued White House attention keeps headline risk elevated in its options.
More broadly, the administration's immigration squeeze, from the $100,000 H-1B fee to university probes, is a slow-burn overhang for any company dependent on foreign talent. That includes most of big tech. Track the policy fallout on the Unusual Whales news feed.
