Vladimir Putin said Russia will support US Vice President Kamala Harris in November’s presidential election because she’s been endorsed by President Joe Biden

Vladimir Putin has expressed that Russia supports Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election over former President Donald Trump.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday, Putin mentioned that Russia's initial "favorite" was President Joe Biden before he withdrew from the race in July. Following Biden’s endorsement of Harris, Putin stated that Russia would now align with that choice.

Context Biden, 81, backed Harris, 59, when he stepped out of the race in July. This came after increased pressure from the Democratic Party, particularly following a problematic CNN debate with Donald Trump in June, which raised questions about Biden’s mental fitness and capacity to serve another term.

"I told you our favorite, if you can call it that, was President Biden. He’s no longer in the race, but he encouraged his supporters to back Ms. Harris. So we will do the same. We will support her," Putin explained.

He emphasized that the final decision rests with the American people and that Russia would respect that choice. “As for favorites, it’s not up to us to decide. It’s the American people's choice."

Putin also complimented Harris, saying, “Her laughter is so expressive and infectious, which suggests she must be doing well.”

He contrasted Harris with Trump, noting that Trump had imposed more sanctions and restrictions on Russia than any prior U.S. president. Putin hinted that if Harris were successful, she might avoid similar actions.

The Kremlin had previously responded cautiously to the news of Harris entering the presidential race.
